Facetime For Mother’s Day

Update: By popular demand, we’ll be offering four separate video-calling services: Apple Facetime, Skype, Google Talk, and the new browser-based AIM AV.

This upcoming Sunday is Mother’s Day. It’s quite common to get flowers or other gifts for Mom, but if you’re like me and you live in a remote place and don’t like frequently taking flights and long roadtrips, just having a face-to-face visit is enough. In fact that’s how I convinced my Mom to get an iPhone - so we could use Facetime to make video calls.

Studies suggest that face-to-face interaction helps promote wellness and prevent mood disorders like depression, and you can get these same benefits from video calls.

So this Sunday, I’m giving a gift not just to my Mom, but as many local mothers as possible. Equipped with an iPhone and an iPad 2, my video calling partner and I will be driving, biking, and running around San Francisco and the East Bay offering assisted video calls to mothers, at absolutely no cost.

Here’s our tentative schedule:

  • Long-term care centers and home visits: 9am to 12:30pm
  • San Francisco Embarcadero from 1pm to 2:30pm
  • Fisherman’s Wharf from 3pm to 4:30pm
  • Jack London Square from 5:30pm to 7pm

Do you have a mother in the bay area and would like us to make a home visit? Fill out the short form below and we’ll be in touch.

On Monday I’ll post about the results, what worked, what didn’t work, lessons learned, and next steps.
