The Engineer and the Polar Bear
Yes, Earth aka Polar Bear Swimming Pool is wreaking havoc on the ecosystems, according to the BBC’s beautiful new Earth film.
I posted about it on Hacker News. Ever since watching it, I’ve felt like there’s so much around me that is far too complex for my puny engineering efforts to even compete.
My favorite response was from Daniel L:
The fact that I've been going back to nature every weekend for the last 4 decades should kind of speak for itself. Math is one of the foundations of all engineering disciplines and some of the great mathematical minds like Newton and fourier and laplace considered themselves more engineers than mathematicians. But nature is nature and engineering is engineering. Both have their fascinations but both are different.
Maybe the software engineers are just another beautiful, really weird offbeat part of the ecosystem.
Like sorority girls, perhaps we deserve a nature documentary.
Every keystroke, rendered on a template, responded from a view, created from a model. Served from the clouds.
PS: The new Tumblr login screen is AMAZING. Facebook could learn from this. And Google too. This design is just so big and pretty, and the buttons are so touchable - I almost smudged by monitor by reaching out and touching the screen (not true).
PSS: Tom Cruise.
