LOST is a Darwinian retelling of Beowulf

I’ve had a few theories about LOST. Up until a couple weeks ago, the jury was out. Here’s a breakdown of what I thought were possible answers to the show:

I’m now 99% sure of exactly what the show is about.  Now that I know, I probably won’t be as interested in following through with each episode.

So consider yourself spoiled.

My theory is that LOST is influenced by Darwin as much as Lovecraft, which kind of blew my mind when I realized it. This is a prime time TV drama about evolution.

And figuring that out, leads us to the kernal at the heart of the show. We can imagine how it formed in its author’s head  The pleasure of a prolonged mystery is the enjoyment of reverse engineering.

So let’s imagine we’re a little voice emitting from a mystery box belonging to JJ Abrams:

“So there’s this island out in the ocean somewhere. But there’s this thing about the island. It’s actually not inhabited by humans, really.

We might say there’s a monster there, or it’s haunted. But it’s actually just an organism, doing what organisms do best - survive.”

Of course, monster stories are never accurate because they always involve a monster in the singular - who is Bigfoot supposed to mate with, anyways?

But then again, if an organism is able to use time and magnetism the way  plants use sunlight and college students use ramen, maybe the rules change.

Or maybe the show really is about nothing, like Seinfeld.
